Playing with Pastels

Near the beginning of this month, I finished a charcoal commission. This 4×6 project of a puppy on a blanket took about 3 1/2 hours to complete. You can watch part of the process on my home page.

I also ordered a bunch of new chalk pastels! I chose one set of twenty-nine colours, and some extra shades of brown and grey for my animal projects. Four different brands are represented in the photo below: Windsor & Newton, Rembrandt, Sennelier, and Conté a Paris.

After doing some experimenting, I gave them a go. This guy was a barrel racer and had such a sweet nature. I wanted a background that was natural-looking but not overly detailed. After some experiments I tried something on the piece and here’s the result.

And then onto the horse!

Pastels are a newer medium for me. They have their challenges, but I love the effects that can be achieved with them.

And here’s what my art corner looked like by the end …
